New Year’s Resolutions

What is your opinion on New Year’s Resolutions?

Are you pro or con of setting up a new year’s resolutions?

There is a huge debate all over the internet around this topic. Many bloggers write that it’s good to have New Year’s resolutions, and many of them strongly suggest (writing very long articles with their arguments) not to do them.

One thing is for sure: It is a fact that whether you support creating New Year’s Resolutions or not, most of the people who actually set some are forgetting about them by 10th January.

We all know the jokes around New Year’s Resolutions:

“I hope all my troubles last as my New Year’s Resolutions.”

“A New Year resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other”

“New Year Day is the day when you make your New Year’s resolutions. Next week you can begin forgetting them as usual.”

A question to you: Have you ever tried setting up resolutions /goals at the end of December/beginning January?

Have you accomplished them?

If not, here are a few possible reasons why:

*We bite more than we can chew

*We set up types of goals not because they are good for us but because we think we should have them

*We are not passionate about them

*Now is not the right time for those things to happen.

I believe in setting up New Year’s Resolutions and actually achieving them. For me, it’s important to sit down, see what is happening in my life and know what I would like to be changed for the better and improved.

You can’t get far if you don’t clearly see the map of where you want to go.

The last two years are the ones I actually achieved almost all of my N Y R. I say almost and not all because for some of them to happen, I could not control circumstances.

For example, attending workshops in London and Amsterdam never happened due to lockdowns.

Also, there was one particular goal I simply gave up on because I lost interest in that by the middle of the year.

Everything else I wanted to achieve is already here.

All of the previous New Year’s R remained more than 70% not accomplished. And I am sharing this information with the purpose of helping you with my perspective and experience.

I figured out why I couldn’t achieve my goals before 2019 and why I can achieve them now. In the last two years, the game-changing factor was creating an additional list of activities for supporting my resolutions.

I realized that I might have the greatest goals and feel extremely enthusiastic about them, but feeling excited is not enough for getting the result. The main key factor in achieving what you want is having the right behavior and the right habits for making things done.

Whether we are setting up official resolutions or not, we all have goals. But we are not all accomplishing those goals because we think our behavior will automatically change just because we decided to change.

“I will start a diet on Monday.”

“I will refresh my CV next week.”

“I am starting exercising on 1st January”

– All of these are decisions/goals/resolutions. But if we wake up on Monday and have the same behavior and habits as always, there go all of the resolutions.

New habits and behaviors don’t come to us automatically or by decision. New behavior will come by our conscious effort in breaking some patterns and getting out of our comfort zone.

This is how I helped myself increase the chances for successfully achieving any goal I want:

Besides my New Year’s Resolutions, there is another additional column of activities I called: Activities that will help me achieve my New Year’s Resolutions:

(This is the whole list):

*Waking up early and practicing a morning routine

*Spending time in nature as much as possible

*Reading books

*Improving the German language

*Brainstorming on new projects

*Attending meetings with people from my work area

*Building content on the website and social media

*When I notice I don’t know something, but I need that for my goals; to learn, research, take a course about it or ask for help

*Learn some more skills

*Practicing and improving the skills I am good at

*Continue to work with a coach

*Reading once a month the notes I made when learning something.

Only when I implemented this behavior to the degree that it became a habit, I start accomplishing things and seeing actual results. Discipline matters the most.

No need to say that the more I get results, my motivation increases to set even bolder and bigger goals.

Which new habits do you need to implement in your behavior to achieve the things you want but don’t have yet?

On our last Coffee with Maya, we’ve been creating goals for 2022, all of us together in a group.

These were these columns:

Job/business- finances

Personal development/achievement

You need more columns because if you set up your financial and business goals, you might succeed there but at the cost of your health and family life. In order to have balance, you need to take care of all of the life aspects equally.

We had so much fun doing this, all of us together. I read in front of everybody what are my professional and personal resolutions and now many ladies are holding me accountable😊

Someone commented that the problem with New Year’s Resolutions is they create pressure. I agree to some point – seeing the goals on paper, especially if they are a little bigger than usual and scare you a little, can cause pressure.

But I have another fact for you: Having no goals at all, making no progress, and not achieving new things will also cause you pressure and uncomfortable feeling of standing at one place while everybody around you is accomplishing more.

So, it’s up to you to choose whether you vote for the pressure of setting up goals and the joy of achieving them or the pressure from not going for the things you want and feeling stuck and regret.

Which one will you choose?

What do you want to achieve in 2022?

If you decide to write me your resolutions by email, I will be happy to reflect on them and give you little tips on how to achieve them.
